Building a website is not what it used to be. Before you had to know how to code with HTML and CSS. Now you can build a website without having to code a single line of code. However, knowing how to read and write code allows you to be able to fully customize your website.
Today, I use WordPress as my website platform because of the many (hundreds)of customization options available for appearance, security, functionality, etc. Furthermore, a staggering 35% of all website is built and powered by WordPress
Let’s go through the list of requirements to build a website.
You’ll require the following:
- Domain name, acquired through your choice of web hosting provider or other registrar
- Hosting, acquired through Godaddy, Bluehost, Siteground, or any other hosting provider
- WordPress, free and easy installation often included in hosting
- WordPress premium theme
Once you have determined the above criteria, and you have installed WordPress, it’s time to start making customization edits throughout the site. There is much consideration to take when you are making the necessary customization to your WordPress theme such as images, content, design, and layout (you can use the pre-existing layout from your chosen theme). However, you should purchase images or use your own. You can then start to add content, just make sure the content is well-written, grammatically correct, and interesting because Google has become a lot more strict about the quality of the content it indexes.
Your content is the single most important element of your website. Your content is responsible for your ranking result with search engines and once you have visitors to your website, you have to keep their attention and interest. Let’s review the factors regarding the content on your site.
The quality of content on your website is the single most important factor in determining your success. Your visitors not only demand content of high value but Google also uses quality as a ranking factor. Google checks the content on your site to ensure it’s free of typos, so make sure your content is well-written.
In addition to the quality of your content, Google also keeps in mind the average length of time visitors spend on your website and the number of pages they visit. This is known as bounce rates and having a high bounce rate means that your visitors are not spending time on your website or visiting other pages. This sends a message to Google that your content might not be of high quality or offer little value to your visitors and this will hurt your ranking.
There are certain things you can implement to help with your visitors increase the length of time which they spend and visit other pages on your website. Other than having high-quality content, make sure you use images that evoke emotion. The use of video and image slideshow will help in increasing the length of time your visitors will spend on your website. Make it so that your visitors can have an interactive experience while on your website.
Google needs to see that visitors remaining on your site for a decent period and visiting different pages. Remember that images are very important and your visitors are more likely to share your content in Social Media when there is an image with your content. Visually it’s much more interesting and an image is always used on Social Media. If there is no image associated with your content then other images such as your logo or background image are used when it’s being shared is Social Media.
The length of your content is directly associated with its quality, in the eyes of Google. One thing we do know is that the average user has a short attention span. Google likes content that is not only of high quality but also that is long not short.
It used to be that publishing ten 150-word articles would get undeniably more traffic than setting up one 1,500-word article, but those days are no more. Nowadays, content should be long – the longer, the better. Another thing to consider with Google is that it favors content that is updated on occasion which means it’s better to add a bit of content to an older article than to create a new one. This matters most to websites than already have a good amount of content on it.
As a rule of thumb, articles should be in at least 500 words, and up to 3,000 (maybe longer at times. Why Google longer content considering declining attention span, however for what it’s worth, length matters.
Another significant factor is ensuring you deliver your content in different methods, including different types of media, for example, recordings, slideshows, and even downloads. You don’t necessarily need to make videos yourself. You can simply insert videos of others into your pages. However, if you can make your own, it will assist you in getting extra traffic from places like YouTube and Facebook.
Having an assortment of posts on your site will assist you with getting more traffic and make your site all the more interesting, so try as much as possible to incorporate different types of content. Target having, in any event, ten posts on your site before you endeavor any sort of advancement or include any promotion or affiliate links. This will assist your positioning in Google, as well as providing additional content for your visitors and hopefully lowering your bounce rate.
